Newmarket and Aurora food banks among 36 recipients of $ 270,000 donation in the Greater Toronto Area
The Mount Pleasant Group, which owns and operates cemeteries, funeral homes and crematoria in the Greater Toronto Area, donates $ 7,500 to each food bank
The Newmarket Food Pantry is one of 36 food banks in York Region and the GTA that have each received $ 7,500 from the Mount Pleasant Group to help meet the growing demand for their services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company, which owns and operates cemeteries, funeral homes and crematoria in the Greater Toronto Area, has donated a total of $ 270,000 to food banks including Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Concord, who have seen the demand for their services double, triple. or even quadruple in the past year, according to a press release.
In addition to serving more residents, challenges facing food banks include either the loss of volunteers or the need to reduce volunteers to meet physical distancing requirements, as well as adjusting their processes and investing in new infrastructure, PPE, tables and tents to distribute food safely.
“We are a community organization,” said Glenn McClary, President and CEO of Mount Pleasant Group. “Our staff live in the neighborhoods we serve and see the effects of COVID-19 on families every day. With these donations, we want to support those on the front line and give something back to our neighbors.
Where possible, donations were hand delivered to food banks by staff at the local Mount Pleasant Group cemetery or funeral home, he added.
