Is the success of GTA Online detrimental to the future of GTA 6?
Fans who hope to see GTA 6 fight over GTA Online often on social media for what they perceive to be a game that uses all the resources of Rockstar Games.
Some fans have given up entirely on seeing GTA 6 coming out anytime soon, which has led parts of the fanbase to draw their attention to Rockstar Games‘ holy cow, GTA Online.
However, it’s not entirely fair to put all the blame on GTA Online. His immeasurable success might make it seem like he’s delayed the GTA 6 release date, but there are other factors to consider.
It wouldn’t be uncommon for the success of GTA Online to require Rockstar to put more effort into it, but it’s something that would be easier to notice once GTA 6 is released, retroactively.
GTA Online and the future of GTA 6
It is not yet known when GTA 6 will be released (or announced for that matter). With an incredibly underwhelming appearance at E3, Rockstar Games’ inability to announce it caused some GTA fans to totally despise GTA Online, a game that continues to receive updates and focus to this day.
However, it should be noted that updates to GTA Online are not as expensive to develop as creating a brand new GTA title. In the grand scheme of things, continuing to focus on GTA Online is a smart business decision. It might be bad for GTA 6 in the present, but it will be worth it in the future.
Games are expensive to make
Many GTA fans love to watch the release date timeline for all GTA games and wonder why GTA 6 is taking so long to release. In a similar amount of time, GTA 3 to GTA 4 was released, and it was full of many iconic GTA titles that fans know and love.
However, video game development has become more expensive over the years for AAA titles. The price of video games has barely increased in comparison, making video game development much longer.
It doesn’t help that the expectations for GTA 6 are high enough, to begin with. GTA 5 was a masterpiece of a game, so anything that fails to do so is bound to disappoint a lot of GTA fans.
Of course, GTA 6 can’t go back to simpler graphics, and that wouldn’t be welcomed by most modern critics and fans.
The insane profit of GTA Online
Even die-hard enemies of GTA Online would be foolish to claim that the game is not making a ridiculous profit for Rockstar Games. While a portion of these profits are used to pay Rockstar employees, a good portion of that money is also reinvested in Rockstar Games projects.
One of those projects is probably GTA 6. If GTA Online had died many years ago, one could argue that GTA 6 would have less immediate funding. Rockstar Games is a wealthy company and could likely accelerate GTA 6 development by then, but video game companies should be looking to turn a profit.
This is where GTA Online excels. It’s fair to say that the constant attention of GTA Online has delayed the release date of GTA 6 a bit, but that would also underestimate the importance of GTA Online to Rockstar Games and its investors.
The future of GTA 6
GTA Online has had both positive and negative influences on the development cycle of GTA 6 in one way, one form, or one form. However, most GTA fans are content to discuss these latest influences without seeing the benefits that GTA Online will bring to GTA 6 once it is released.
