First reported by The National, three job vacancies for Game Testers were recently posted by Rockstar Games for its studios in Edinburgh, India and Lincoln, sparking rumors that a Grand Theft Auto 6 the announcement could finally be on the horizon. According to the listings, potential applicants would be required to find, report and reproduce bugs via game logs, screenshots and videos. Unsurprisingly, those who wish to be considered will need to have an understanding and interest in the games industry, “knowledge of current generation game consoles and PCs,” and be “proficient at play. “
As Edinburgh-based Rockstar North is the studio responsible for the GTA series, the list of game testers could very well mean that testing for the highly anticipated game could begin soon. Interestingly, the list varies slightly for the role at Rockstar India, indicating that applicants would need knowledge and experience of recent titles from the developer. This could suggest that Rockstar may just be finishing work on the GTA Online standalone game or the next-generation port of GTA 5, the latter should be published in the second half of 2021.
With the release of the next generation of consoles, the higher performance capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S would mean an ideal release time for GTA 6 is sooner rather than later. An early launch of the life of the console would maximize the longevity of new machines, while GTA 5 feels particularly dated in 2013 as it was released towards the end of the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation. Considering the massive revenue that Rockstar continues to receive GTA Online (and soon triple-dipping on GTA 5 purchases) and its thriving community eight years after its release, it’s no surprise the developer has taken their time with anything Grand Theft Auto 6– related so far.
